Every child has their lovey, a toy, a stuffed animal, some soft piece of cloth, or for my boy it's his crocheted blanket. His one true love is his blue and white blanket that I made for him while carrying him in my belly. Hours were spent resting, picturing my perfect little boy, growing inside me. Hours of prayers sent up for health and happiness for our little baby. The blue blanket has been with him since the beginning, before his story took a sad turn for a bit, he was wrapped in it. My favorite picture of Zane's tiny hand and my father's farmer hands is set to the back drop of Zane wrapped in his lovey. This blanket went to the hospital, though admittedly was kept out of his crib while he had chest tubes and other messy things like that, so as not to stain his one true lovey.
This is Zane, just home from the hospital, reunited with his blankie.
He has healed and grown into an energetic little boy. Gone are most things from his babyhood, the bottles, the crib, the binkis, but his blanket is still there, though less fluffy, not as bright, and much longer. He can live without it and has gone to sleep without it,under duress, before but it is his safe place, his comfort, and he can keep that as long as he needs it.
To be fair the blue blanket wasn't his first love. Initially he couldn't resist a white, soft, random Winnie the Poo blanket, which was dubbed the magic blanket. When Zane was little bitty he would fall asleep this moment this blanket touched his face. It was so magical that we bought two, one for home and one for daycare. This blanket could very well still be his lovey, but I had an invested interest in the blue blanket, so may have pushed for it to move up in the running. But no story of blankets would be complete without mention of the magic blanket.
What an adorable picture, sure wish I had more memories of the time with him when he was so little.
The magic blanket was with him in the crib after surgery. I guess I was less concerned about it getting stained or lost. Here is little Zane chewing on his EKG wires, wrapped in his blankie.
Though his blue blanket will always be his go to lovely he recently has also gotten attached to his numerous other quilts, all made with love and prayers from those who adore him. Zane is so blessed to have two Grandmother's who are wonderful quilter, both of who made him blankets, filled with love, for him to rest under as he grows up. Zane's most recent illness was the first time he really would lay on the couch and watch TV, like a normal sick person. This meant that it was really the first time, since he was a baby playing on quilts, that I could really put them to go use. He did briefly use them to cover up in his crib, but quickly learned how to escape from there, moving him to his boy boy bed, with exhibit number one of his fun quilts. Grammi made him this bug quilt for his second birthday. It has bug fabric that looks like they are in mason jars. Grandma B has one like it at the farm that is used for cuddles at Grandma B's house.
Here is Zane, the first day in his big boy bed, covered with his adorable bug quilt!
Before Zane was born Grammi gave us a beautiful blue and yellow blanket, which was his go to quilt to play on when he was little. It was thick enough so he could play upstairs without concerns for hitting his head on the hardwood floors. Zane actually staying on the quilt, didn't last long, he quickly became mobile and was off to walking, running, and bigger adventures. But the blanket has come back into favor, perfect for laying under in the mornings, while watching cartoons, or better yet for hiding under.
Grandma B made him quite possibly my favorite quilt ever, which looks like a mixture of pinwheels and circus tents. It isn't quilted and thick, just thin and perfect for cuddling under. We call these Hannah blankets in our family and I love them! During Zane's recent illness he became quite attached to this little quilt and his worm quilt, made by Grammi for his first Christmas. Both equally as fun and he has split his time between both of them since. Some nights he needs one or the other of these and his bug quilt. You can never have to many blankets, right?
This is Zane, cuddled with his Godfather, after his baptism, under his circus blanket as we call it.
This is baby Zane, under his worm quilt when he was six months old.
Now fast forward two years to little boy Zane, sleeping, sick, under the same blanket.
I am loving that he likes to use them and has strong opinions about when he wants which one. After he threw up on "his bugs," as he calls it, during the middle of the night, I put a random brown blanket on his bed while I washed the bug quilt. He absolutely refused to be covered up with it and brought his other little quilts into bed with him instead. I wouldn't put his bugs back on for a few days, for fear of more middle of the night vomiting episodes, but once they returned he was over joyed. What a lucky little guy to be covered in the love of so many people! I am sure Rowan has quilts coming his way. I can't wait to see what he will be covered up in with in the years to come.
