Farm Camp 2015: Day Two

We woke up to cloudy skies and a chilly, windy morning on day two of farm camp. We put jackets on over our Farm Camp shirts and headed out to the days first activity, garden time. The kids were overly exhausted from the previous days adventures and lack of sleep. We had a few lack luster campers help put a some plants into the ground before they all decided helping with the tree house build seemed like more fun. You can't force farm camp activities so we gave up on garden time.

Zach and Uncle Brent were deep in tree house building for the majority of Saturday. Zach tried to skip out on the next adventure, the West Pasture Snake Hunt, but was railed on by his son, "Daddy, it's FARM CAMP!!! It says it right there on your shirt! You have to go!!!" After getting yelled at by a four year old Zach agreed to go snake hunting, complete with a snake catcher from Great Grandpa Dotter. Great Grandpa lives in Okeene, OK the home of the great Okeene Rattle Snake hunt, so of course he had a snake catcher for us to borrow.

Off we headed into the West Pasture, ready to find all sorts of nature. We forgot the big plastic bucket, so a Sonic cup had to do to hold all of our finds.
Zane, ready with the snake catcher.

What we learned from our mother's day snake hunt is that all the best finds come from turning over rocks, the larger the better. Under the first rock, that Zane and Brendan turned over, were three lizards, holding rather still from the cold, Zane was able to catch one, but dropped it after he "opened his mouth to try to eat him." Under the first rock I turned over was a baby gray rat snake, also nice and sleepy thanks to the cold. The snake catcher proved too big for such a little baby snake, so Uncle Zach came to the rescue and caught him for us. Zane, the snake expert, was first in line (possibly the only one in line) to hold the snake!!

The snake was put in the Sonic cup and Rowan quickly requested, "I cuddo the snake mamma." And he did for the rest of the hunt.

We searched under all the rocks at the first pond. We found numerous scorpions, another snake (garter snake), and a little lizard that Mom caught so we could take it home and examine it further. On the way back to the car Zane found some mushrooms so he could finally use his mushroom pamphlet. It was a very successful snake hunt, ending in all our little creatures getting their own glass jar home so the campers good look at them for the rest of the day.

This snake was NOT sleepy, spinning around like crazy, earning him the name Tornado.

Real naps were in order for this day, with a slew of sleepy kids. Once they awoke from naps we found a camper with an ear down, as dad would say. As we started to get ready to go to town for our afternoon adventure Brendan started throwing up and was left behind with the builders. Farm camp always seems to end in an illness of some sort.

The rest of us headed off to explore Leonardo's in Enid. This is a children's museum that is half traveling exhibits half there normal activities. This time the traveling exhibit was Keep Moving and wasn't our favorite but kept everyone entertained for a little bit before we headed out to the Adventure Quest Castle.

The fireman garb is always a big hit.

After we found everyone in the castle we headed to the trains, which we thought opened early on the weekend. Turns out the website was wrong. The train and the carousel were both closed when we got there so we had to settle for the playgrounds.

These two were having none of picture time at the park.

We had a nervous pizza dinner as Maggie started to complain of stomach pains as well. We scrapped the train plan, for fear of vomiting, and headed home to check on the progress of the tree house. We were all impressed to find the stairs all built and most of the floor finished. Brendan was definitely still sick and ready to head home.

Originally this was going to be a Korenak Family picture, but two bonus kids snuck in there. Have fun with that one genealogists.

The Richards Family packed up and headed South and we tried to air out the house/disinfect the germs. We all headed to bed extremely exhausted and sadly the night was less than restful. Rowan was up most of the night and Zane had his first night terror in over a year.

Evening came and morning followed.... the third day!
