2012: The Year in Pictures

As the year comes to a close I wanted to take a look back on the year past. It has been quite the year with all sorts of exciting news coming to our family. We welcomed another nephew, which was an ultimate highlight and found out we would be welcoming another little boy to our family as well. It has been an absolute joy sharing this special time with Zane, when it was just Zane and us. Zane has grown by leaps and bounds and seems so much bigger and more grown up than at the start of the year. He is ready to embark on big brotherhood, even if he has no idea what that really means. We are very excited for 2013, with all the many changes it will bring. Here is a look back at 2012.

JANUARY
Hello 2012, I'm a big boy!

FEBRUARY
Thanks to a very mild winter Zane and I made several trips to the zoo in February and he got his 18 months pictures taken.

MARCH
Big news this month was that Zane's crib was turned into a toddler bed, which he loved.

APRIL
Spring time fun!

MAY
I turned 29 and we took our first family vacation to Chicago.

JUNE
This month Zane turned two and we found out baby number two was on his way.

JULY
We went home to meet our newest nephew, Everett, who was born in June. And I went to Charleston for girls weekend 2012.
Zane jumping head first into the pool could be my favorite picture of the year.

AUGUST
In August Zane announced he was going to be a big brother and moved into his big boy room.

SEPTEMBER
We celebrated Daddy's birthday and headed to OK for Everett's baptism.

OCTOBER
This month was full of fall and Halloween fun. We also found out that baby number two was a boy!

NOVEMBER
Thanksgiving here at home and more fall fun!

DECEMBER
We were surrounded by all things Christmas, as soon really started to understand the holiday season.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

Christmas 2012

Well Christmas has come and gone once again. There was quite the build up to this Christmas, with Zane fully engrossed in all things Christmas for the past month. We had a lovely Christmas morning, full of presents and surprises, then a highly uneventful afternoon, per our tradition I guess. Zane woke up at 6:15 and was ready to see if Santa had eaten his cookies. He was amazed when all the cookies were gone, as was the milk. However, our smart boy did notice that there were still a lot of cookies on the cooking rack on the counter, that looked a lot like the cookies we left Santa.

Then we headed downstairs for the big show. Zane was much more calm than I thought he would be, after seeing the craziness that was Zane at Mom's present exchange. He watched patiently as Zach and I would open our few little gifts and with every gift he got out from under the tree he would say, "is it for me???" Yes, they are pretty much all for you. His tool bench was his big gift this year and it did not disappoint. He played with it for quite awhile before he moved on to his stocking. He got a wide range of things, with his highlight probably being a car with a drill that takes apart and puts the car back together. The drill makes the drill noise, so really that is all you need it for, fixing all sorts of things around the house all day. Other gifts included, a wooded blue robot whose arms and legs can move in all sorts of fun positions, a broom just his size for cleaning with mamma, a hobby horse that makes galloping and horse sounds when you press his ears, a little Mickey Mouse, books about robots and pirates, a CAT machine, fireman rain boots, coloring books, and a fireman's hat.
That's right, his tool bench has a drill press that makes a drilling sound as well.
Love this shot of his head in his stocking.
Nothing like a $5 Mickey to push the day over the top.
BEBOT!!!
Trying on his boots! He got to stomp around in some leaves with daddy later, just to make sure they worked!

We had biscuits and gravy after opening presents and then it was 8am. I spent most the rest of the day trying to get a nap in and being stressed out about having to work this evening. I am currently on call so I hopefully get to stay home. It is the worst feeling when you know there is a chance you might not have to work, because that would be awesome, but then there is a chance you still might have to stay up all night, with zero sleep and that would be terrible. So you stress and can't fall asleep, and waste the whole day either way. I gave up my fight at around 2:30 and just played with Zane the rest of the day. Luckily I was put on call so I got to sing my very excited boy to sleep tonight.

Zane had a great day with no requests for the iPad thanks to all his new toys entertaining him. He loves his drill, which does actually screw in the screws on the car and on his work bench, if he concentrates. He put out fires, was a robot, was a cowboy on a horse, did some construction with his new cat machine, and ate a lot of cookies! Hey, it's Christmas right! I am a little concerned that he thinks Santa comes more often than once a year, but he will figure it out I guess.

Zach got this CAT machine for Zane's birthday, but it never made it out of the closet. So it made a wonderful Christmas gift instead. It doesn't make any noises though, which Zane finds confusing.

This is his new horse, Rusty. Thanks Grandma, we love the newest member of the family.
"Daddy, there's a fire, right here."

Zane ask about his Grandparent's a lot today, "Is Grandma coming?" "We see Papa and Grammi?" As though he knew it was a big day that should really be shared with more people. I hate that he won't get to see them on every holiday. Even if he could see one side he couldn't see them both, which breaks my heart. I saw all my Grandparents every holiday growing up. Just one of many things in his life different than my childhood, such is life. Zane could sense that I was sad/stressed this afternoon and constantly would ask "You happy mamma?" "I'm happy, daddy happy." When I was signing to him before his nap, I was a little teary eyed and he said he said "you happy mamma? You my best friend!" Then gave me a big hug... then there were tears. What a tender hearted little boy I have.

And that was our Christmas. Lots of thoughts about next year mulling around in my head. I am excited to meet Rowan, but scared of all the changes that lie ahead as well. Hopefully everyone had a safe, happy, Christmas! We miss you all and are sending everyone tons of love from the STL.

Christmas Eve 2012

Today was full of Christmas excitement. We had to make cookies for Santa, of course! We made the first batch yesterday, Smore's Cookies, and today we made the traditional cut out cookies for Santa. The smore's cookies were amazing and Zane thoroughly enjoyed the whole cookie making process. Today he lost interest pretty quickly, but did get some cookies cut out and decorated, before he moved on to being the DJ of the party on the iPad.
Here is Zane, yesterday, in charge of the mixing speeds. He did a great job!
Here is Zaney, before losing interest in the whole process.
Zane's favorite part, eating lots and lots of dough.
Love this picture of Zane and I's hands.
 The decorating crew.
You can tell the two year old lost interest in the decorating process based on the intricately decorated star.
We watched random bits of several Christmas shows this afternoon then got ready for 4:30 mass. We had some fun with the new camera before we left, taking pictures in front of the tree down stairs.

I thought the 4:30 mass would be pretty empty since it was the earliest of the three masses, turns out that was not the case. We showed up about ten minutes early and got a seat by the grace of God, or the nice ushers who located a seat for the poor pregnant lady holding a two year old. It was a beautiful mass, with a children's choir, that sang all the songs that should be song on Christmas Eve. I do still think Silent Night should be sung in candle light, but what can you do.  Zane did well, though he did ask "all done?" "Ready to go?" after each song. He did recognize  a lot of the songs, which we had sung before bed time. "Baby Jesus go night night mamma," exactly!

We got home in time for dinner and a fire in the fire place before it was bath and bed time. Zane always loves helping with the fires and tonight was no different. After enjoying the fire it was time to put out cookies and milk for Santa. Zane placed them, just so, on the plate this year, then dictated a note to Santa. It was just about the cutest thing I have ever seen.

Eating a cookie while watching a Mickey Mouse Christmas special.
Arranging the cookies, "this go right here."
" No Daddy, don't touch it, they for Santa."
 Happy Christmas time!
Singing his letter to Santa with his hand print, then a kiss!
 Merry Christmas Santa!

Here is what the letter says, as best Zach could decipher:

Umm.. These cookies right here, are for Santa. Where are you? Why? Flying to the moon. Need a cookie. Santa, need to open presents.
Love,
Zane

Then it was book time and then time for bed. Zane was full of innocent excitement. He couldn't sit still and was beyond thrilled about Santa's arrival. Putting him to bed I remembered the nights in the bunk bed, trying to fall asleep, but not being able to sleep because it was Christmas Eve and there was too much excitement in the air. Then before I knew it Christmas was all over and it seemed like an eternity until it would be Christmas time again. Now Christmas comes quickly and the memories from my childhood can't be recreated. The house doesn't exist, people are missing, and their are new little lives making their own Christmas memories. Christmas Eve mass makes me miss my dad and the car rides full of laughter on the way home. But now we are making new wonderful memories with our own happy little boy, soon to be boys! Next Christmas Rowan will be almost a year old, I can't picture it, but I'm sure it was be tons of fun.
Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!!!
