I am sure you all know by now that I got my first degree at The University of Oklahoma. I graduated in 2006, a year before a young Sam Bradford would became quarterback for my beloved Sooners. I was there to watch Adrianne Peterson play and there was an incident where I literally almost hit him with my car as he was running across the street ( that's a different story), but never actually saw Sam play in person, but did cheer him on from afar as he led my Sooners to some great seasons.
So you can imagine how excited I was when my fellow Sooner, Sammy B, was the first round draft pick for the St. Louis Rams last year. I am pretty sure since we both went to OU and both subsequently moved to St. Louis we are basically best friends. I tell people this all the time and they laugh, but I mean we live pretty much parrelle lives, minus him being a bizillionaire and me not being a professional football player.
So I know what you are thinking, 'Audra why are you telling a random story about Sam Bradford when it isn't even football season.' Well here is why, it leads to the random story of the day which I find rather hysterical.
Here goes...
Yesterday, was a pretty slow day at work so I had time to talk to the head of HR when he came around our floor asking if there were any cute patients who would like to be in a video that they would be sending to Sam Bradford to try to to get him to do PSAs for Children's. They are hoping to get him to talk about the importance of wearing helmets and seat belts. I promptly said "Sammy, we went to college together" and proceeded to talk about how we are basically best friends, like I do every time I talk to anyone from St. Louis about Sam Bradford. This is just barely stretching the truth, since technically I wasn't at OU at the same time that he was, but we went to the same school so obviously we know each other. The HR guy ate this conversation up, asking me if we had hand signals, if we were in classes together, he wanted to know what a sooner was, and took my information down so he could come back the next day and put me in a video. I, in no way, thought that this would actually happen and went on with my day.
Skip forward to today at work when the head of SLCH marketing shows up on my floor with a camera crew for my 'shoot.' It was all I could do to keep a straight face as the lady asked me if there were any sort of hand signs I could do, like hook 'em horns, and as she asked me what exactly a boomer was. I promptly told her that our hand sign is down with the long horns, which I was pretty sure wasn't very professional, so I told her that I would just say Boomer Sooner at the end of my speech. I proceeded to make up some sort of speech to say, completely off the cuff, to Sam about how he should support kids wearing helmets and seat belts. I ended my speech with a rousing BOOMER SOONER, which I am pretty sure the marketing person wasn't sure about because she asked me, very concerned, 'is he going to know what that means?' I replied, " Oh yeah, Sammy will totally know what the means, don't worry."
None of the cute patients on the floor wanted to be part of this video, so I might be the only person on the trying to get Sam to support helmet and seat belt safety. That doesn't bode well for Sammy doing the PSAs. Either way, it led to a very entertaining day at work and a great Random Story of the Day!!
i love your randomness and how you totally acted like you're bff with him!!!
