Update from the Korenak House

I meant to do a one week update on Thursday, but that didn't happen so here is an update from our neck of the woods, with some adorable pictures thrown in just for fun! Thursday Rowan and I headed back to the doctor, three days after I got really excited about not having to go back for a month. Rowan's little tongue was covered with what I knew was thrush, but they still had to check him out. He indeed did have thrush, which is super grouse, and requires a terrible treatment regimen of a terrible tasting medicine, scrubbed on his mouth/tongue with a q-tip or wash cloth, four times a day. Thrush is common in newborns, especially ones whose mother happened to be taking a Z-pack when they were born. It's caused by a yeast found in everyone's mouth, but newborns have zero immune system so it can easily become over grown. His poor little mouth looked terrible, but is slowly getting better, though he hates his medicine.

The other issue that we are having is that Rowan hasn't seemed to figure out how to poop on his own. In the hospital he was a champion pooper, going a ton during our day and a half there. Now he doesn't go for days at a time, leading to a huge belly and a baby boy up all night straining, crying, and all around miserable. The NP at the office on Thursday said to give his body time to "figure it out" but at the two and a half day point, when I thought his belly might explode, I gave him a suppository so he could finally relax. I will spare you the details, but it was a bit of a horror show. We are now at the day and half point, again, and he is working super hard, red faced, and totally  miserable. We are going to have to change something up ASAP.

Other than the being up all night when he can't poop he is great. Last night he only got up three times, which would be totally fine, if my oldest child hadn't also gotten up three times. This is the worst case scenario that I had envisioned when I was pregnant, Zane and Rowan alternating being up all night. I don't know how to fix it, but it is beyond frustrating. After one night of being up all night with a crabby baby we pulled the trigger on getting a recliner. No idea why we put this off for so long, but it will make everything much more bearable. My thought process on it all is, anything that doesn't require him to be intubated I can handle. These are all simple, normal, problems, which I'm beyond grateful to be spending my time thinking about, instead of something truly terrible.

Book time with big brother.

Big brother has officially lost his mind. The reality of the situation I think is setting in, leading to a day with more time spent in timeout than in the past month. He can't seem to listen, follow instructions, or remember how to appropriately talk to his parents without being terribly rude. Grandma B is still here and has been a God sent, playing with Zane while we take care of Rowan, take professional pictures, nap, cook, clean, or try to not loose our mind. Things could be worse, but I'm scared to see how he will do when there isn't anyone else here to entertain him. This situation is also playing out how I had envisioned it, with most of my time with Zane being spent having to discipline him instead of playing with him, which breaks my heart. I don't know how long things will be like this before they get better, but I'm sure they will get better at some point.

That's the update. We are fine, Zach is back to work, I'm loving my  new baby boy and my maternity leave full of normal problems and nothing going on. I have yet to figure out how to leave the house successfully with both boys so we are home bound for a while. It's also has been extremely cold and snowy all week so don't want to take them out in this weather anyway. Hopefully spring time is just around the corner.

  1. So, my strategy for leaving the house with two kids is this. Always have an exit strategy for wherever you are going. You can, realistically, only really carry one of them at a time. So, if the place you are going does not have shopping cards, you need to bring a stroller. The stroller can be for either child, but you need to have the ability to put your bag somewhere, and be able to carry one child out of wherever you are, kicking if the worst happens, and still get the other out safely. Hopefully, you will never need to employ said strategy, but I learned the hard way, and now always have a plan for the younger two.

    1. That should be "shopping carts" not shopping cards, obviously.
