Bean Bag Boards

Last Saturday during the epic meat smoking adventure ( look forward to a blog post on Zach's blog about this in the future) Zach and Able decided that they wanted to build bean bag boards. Keep in mind that the great smoking adventure started at 5am after the two of them had gone to sleep around 1:30am (Able's plane didn't get to the STL until midnight). They were completely dedicated to their meat smoking but needed another project so they made lovely bean bag boards. During the making of these boards all the girls were inside questioning what they were thinking. I personally thought that the boards would get made and either A. never get used or B. we would never get bean bags made because Mom, who initially had been put on bean bag making duty, would be way to busy on Grandma duty to make them.

In steps Zach's Grandmother Georgia who is always looking for a project and a way to help. She was in the living room while my siblings and I were arguing over the point of the bean bag boards. During this time Able was also explaining the importance of home made, regulation size bean bags not just hacky sacks or bean bags from a store. Georgia chimed in that she had a sewing machine and that her and Amy could make the bean bags that night if we could get them some fabric. We got them fabric and the next day Amy and Georgia showed up with not just regulation sized bean bags but also a smaller set of bean bags for the kids.

This is where the story gets interesting. Apparently Amy risked her life to make us such amazing bean bags. While sewing the bean bags she was inadvertently locked in the basement and left pounding on the door trying to get someone to let her out. By this time at night Georgia had taken out her hearing aids so she couldn't hear her at all, but luckily Mike was outside fixing a step and heard her cries for help.

All of the struggle was totally worth while because after everyone left on Sunday we had hours of bean bagging fun. It was unbelievably hot/humid so Anna and I really only made it through three games of bean bags. Able and Anna won all of the games, partly due to the fact that Able plays this game a lot ( and claims to have won $150 playing it before ) and partly due to the fact that Anna is strangely good at bean bags ( not really sure why I'm surprised she is such an athlete). I was horrible at bean bags and the by the third game my rib injury was really hurting, but I played through the pain. There was quite a bit of trash talk going on between Zach and Anna, hopefully their friendship survived this intense bean bag match.

Yesterday Maggie and Brendan got in on the bean bag fun. Maggie really enjoyed putting the baby bean bags in the hole and Brendan just had more fun through the bags, not necessarily towards the board. Turns out the boards also doubles nicely as a baby slide. Maybe we will entertain more so we can get more use out of our new backyard game.
